The
Pilates Matrix Advantage
The Pilates Matrix takes Pilates to the next level by enabling
teachers to pinpoint as never before areas of muscle weakness
or recruitment problems, resulting in a more specific and effective
program for the client.
Developed by physiotherapist Sarah Mottram in collaboration
with Mark Comerford, The Pilates Matrix is the result of years
of research, case analyses and combined clinical experience
that reflects both the latest scientific research and the application
of traditional Pilates.
Even though Joe devised and evolved his series of exercises
as early as the 1920s, it seems only yesterday that the Pilates
Method was the exciting ‘new’ movement discipline
embraced by the medical profession and celebrities alike - the
former for its remedial applications - the latter for its sculpting
and strengthening benefits.
Today, skilled Pilates teachers continue to broaden the horizons
of the original Pilates Method, enriching and evolving the work
through their own experience and varied areas of expertise.
There are now thousands of teachers and studios throughout the
UK as well as a growing number of recognised teacher-training
organisations including Pilates Foundation UK, Body Control,
Stott and Polestar, all training new teachers everyday.
The demand for developing exceptional
teaching skills and more precise assessment techniques as has
never been greater.
A revolutionary assessment-based system, The Pilates Matrix
is comprised of a series of specific movements, postures and
exercises designed to accurately expose weakness or imbalance
in the client. Highly effective as a tool for locating the root
cause of existing pathology, clients with no obvious pathology
can also benefit from identifying areas of ‘vacancy’
or poor recruitment. Good Pilates teachers have always been
able to address rehab issues with the Pilates repertoire, but
early detection and prevention before the onset of pain or pathology
has been a much greyer area.
By applying The Pilates Matrix assessment to all clients as
part of a comprehensive, individualised programme, we can be
sure that we are working to a much more specific brief than
ever before, thus providing us with a leading edge in an increasingly
competitive field.
The Pilates Matrix gives us the ability to offer not only an
intelligent form of exercise and deeper understanding of the
connection of mind and body, but also a program guaranteed to
be specific to the individual. By precisely identifying the
problem, we as Pilates teachers can then use our special skills
to much greater advantage in retraining posture, gait and muscle
recruitment and can look forward to the day when care and attention
to musculo-skeletal health will be as ubiquitous as good dental
health and other health screening and prevention programs.
