The Pilates Focus Series: Neck and Upper Back

The Pilates Focus Series is suitable for Pilates teachers, Pilates trained rehabilitation professionals, and Physiotherapists with a working knowledge of Pilates who want to use Pilates in clinical practice.

Course Outline

The course content will include:

  • Functional anatomy and biomechanics of the neck and upper back
  • Alignment and posture
  • Review of the site and direction of uncontrolled movement of the neck and upper back
  • Muscle function and classification of the neck and upper back (global stability muscle system and global mobility muscle system)
  • Low threshold recruitment retraining strategies using principles of dissociation and range
  • High threshold recruitment retraining strategies using principles of dissociation, control of range and unstable base training
  • The myth of core stability / adapting repertoire to target the specific movement fault
  • Functional integration
  • Adapting Pilates repertoire to control uncontrolled movement of the neck and upper back
  • Indications, contra-indications and precautions of common dysfunctions encountered in the Pilates Studio
