The Pilates Focus Series: Shoulder and Arm

The Pilates Focus Series will take Pilates to the next level by enabling teachers to retrain specific sites and directions of uncontrolled movement by adapting repertoire based on retraining strategies and principles detailed in this course.

Course Outline

The course content will include:

  • Functional anatomy and biomechanics of the shoulder
  • Alignment and posture
  • Review of the site and direction of uncontrolled movement of the shoulder
  • Muscle function and classification of the shoulder (global stability muscle system and global mobility muscle system)
  • Low threshold recruitment retraining strategies using principles of dissociation and range
  • High threshold recruitment retraining strategies using principles of dissociation, control of range and unstable base training
  • The myth of core stability / adapting repertoire to target the specific movement fault
  • Functional integration
  • Adapting Pilates repertoire to control uncontrolled movement of the shoulder
  • Indications, contra-indications and precautions of common dysfunctions encountered in the Pilates Studio
